This Saturday may be the first time Colorado Rapids Forward Brian Mullan will walk onto Century Link field after becoming Sounder public enemy number one. Almost one full year ago he viciously tackled beloved Sounders midfielder Steve Zakuani, who is still recovering from the injury today. The video of the tackle can be seen here…
Mullan claimed this was a tackle he had made often and did not intend to hurt Zakuani, even though when watching the video it is clear Mullan was angry about the call he should have received for Tyson Wahl pulling his arm, leading him to brutally slide into Zakuani.
When it comes to being disliked by the Sounders, there is not one player even close to Brian Mullan. He did not even make the trip when the Sounders hosted the Rapids last July, and most fans wanted him kicked out of the MLS. He received a ten game suspension and was fined 5,000 dollars. While a full year has passed since the injury, the Sounders fans will obviously not let Mullan touch the ball Saturday without letting him know how they feel about him if he plays. If he is not starting the match but is still present, he should definitely bring a pair of headphones to block out the insults that will be being sent towards the bench every minute of the game. At the end of the day, however, the Sounders fans will discover yelling at Mullan will not turn back time and bring Zakuani to full strength. If he is bold enough to come to the Emerald City with his team, the presence of Mullan will lead to a unique twist on a typical matinee Sounders match.
