The new connection in Seattle is heating up in Florida. While being a UDFA last year, Doug Baldwin broke many records and proved, at least to the Seahawks, why he should remain on the WR list. Although not from a national standpoint, the Seahawks WR group is deep with talent, with guys scratching to get playing time. Currently, after the release of Mike Williams, the Seahawks stand with 12 WR’s. Williams was speculated to start opposite of Sidney Rice when the season began. With the departure of Williams, the spot is now open. Baldwin is stepping up and proving he can fill that void.
With no OTA’s and no training camp last season due to the lockout, the Seahawks named Tarvaris Jackson the starter due to his knowledge of the system being installed. This year is quite a bit different. Everyone in the NFL world knows that there is a Qb battle here in Seattle, so there’s no sense in beating a dead horse.
So when two players, away from the VMAC, decide to get together and begin to get some bugs out, its big news for Seahawk fans. One of the new guys here in Seattle named Matt Flynn, hooked up with none other than Doug Baldwin to work some kinks out. Bob Heist of the Pensacola News Journal wrote that Flynn came from his home in Louisiana, to Florida to work out with Baldwin earlier this week.
“Days like today, all of this is invaluable, you can’t really put words on it because all the time you get with anybody on your team,” Baldwin stated. “That’s a chance to build that rapport, that chemistry … And, obviously, he drove down from Louisiana to work and it adds that extra boost to the relationship. Now it’s already kind of been established. I have an offensive playbook that I can continue to learn and prepare on, and I know there are guys I’m going to be playing with that I can work out with and talk to and build a relationship and chemistry with.”
Flynn was excited about working with Baldwin one on one. Their chemistry is truly beginning to shine.
“He broke the record last year and he’s a very dynamic guy. I’ve been throwing to him for only two months but I can already see how he’s a special player and will be around for a long time.”
Flynn and Baldwin had already had a connection before all of this started. As soon as Flynn signed with the Seahawks, Flynn said he would like to wear the number 15 jersey. The same number 15 jersey that Baldwin used to be the top Seahawk receiver last year. Baldwin gracefully gave up the number and moved his number to 89.
While the QB battle here in Seattle has yet to expose just who is starting, it’s nice to see that at least one of the competitors is out getting some extra work in. With Baldwin being aggressive and going after himself so he avoids the sophomore slump, and the new gun in town, Matt Flynn working together, we are sure to see the new focus for the Offense. Pete Carroll is insisting that the Seahawks are going to remain a run first team, but having that connection between QB and WR will allow for Lynch to break for more yardage. The Seahawks are looking to be a very promising team in 2012, and all of the little pieces are going together, even when the players aren’t here in Seattle.
