The Seattle Sounders will host English Premier Club Chelsea on July 18th at Century Link field. This will be the second time Seattle will host the famous men in blue, the first time being a 2-0 win to Chelsea which took place during July of the Sounders inaugural MLS season. The announcement of this game immediately makes every Sounder fan think of the 7-0 thrashing they had to watch their team endure at the hands of Manchester United last season. The Sounders generally have played very poorly against super teams, not having managed to register a goal against Chelsea, Manchester United, or Barcelona and having 13 netted against them. What frustrates the fans about these games is how they strangely revert to a 4th grade game where every player (including random trialists) plays in the match. Many flustered fans were yelling to Coach Sigi Schmid asking if they could sub into the Manchester United game as they watched players without names on their jerseys whom they didn’t recognize sub in for their side. Because of this match which everyone tries so hard to forget, the Sounders owe it to their fans to do their best in this year’s friendly. In order to not embarrass the team on the international stage further, the Sounders need to at least fulfill the following criteria.
1. Score a goal- The Sounders are starving for a goal in these types of friendly matches.
2. Keep the score line within 2 goals- Anything more would once again embarrass the Sounders and their fans.
3. Try to win- Friendly or not, the Sounders owe it to their fans to pour their hearts into this game. And who knows, in doing so the men in Rave Green may be able to shock the world and pull off the impossible.
