With the training camp opened up and most of us unable to attend due to various reasons, distance, money, time, we are trying to compile everything together here for you in one easy location. There are plenty of different updates, we will try to get to them all.
Training camp opened up on Saturday, and if you haven’t heard any news, three players were placed on the PUP(Physically Unable to perform). James Carpenter(knee), Jermaine Kearse(Foot), and Walter Thurmond(leg). Those in red jerseys were of course the QBs, Tarvaris Jackson, Matt Flynn, Russell Wilson, Josh Portis. Sidney Rice also started out in a red jersey after the off-season surgery to his shoulders.
Eric Williams at Tacoma News Tribune said that the Offensive starters were: Okung, McQuistan, Unger, Moffitt, Giacomini. The second unit was composed of: Frank Omiyale, JR Sweezy, Lemuel Jeanpierre, Deuce Lutui, and Paul Fanaika. The big news here in Seattle is the QB competition. The three QBs are all vying for the top seat, and will continue to do so until Carroll makes his “decision”.
“There were some good points and some low points,” Matt Flynn said. “It was just the first day, just getting some of the kinks out trying to get on the same page.”
“There was a little bit of everything today,” Pete Carroll said. “We’re started. We’re underway. We’ve got a big-time formula that we’re unveiling as we go with the reps and how we do it and the timing and the patience it’s going to take to make really good decisions here. This is just the first step of it. There’s no reason to evaluate today.”
While the QB competition is a big deal to a lot of 12th man, it’s not everything. Chris Clemons was back in camp after signing his new deal, and stripped the ball from Robert Turbin, allowing Sherman to recover it. Speaking of Sherman, he had a pick-six off of a Tarvaris Jackson throw. LB Mike Morgan also had an interception courtesy of Matt Flynn. Earl Thomas also was close to getting an interception himself, but it slipped through his hands.
“Rookies are not rookies anymore,” Chris Clemons said. “They’re all grown now, so everybody is coming out and you’re got to have an attitude going into it now. It’s not the same as the first year.”
The defense stepped up today, and really made mismatches for the offense. New additions are flying to the ball, and are looking to boost this years team towards the biggest stage in football. The defense last year was much improved from the years before, and its only going to get better with players like Sherman, Irvin, Jones, and Wagner all making strides.
“Seeing what type of defense they had last year – a top-10 defense – was a big factor,” new Seahawk Jason Jones said. “So just coming in and adding my little thing to it, I think we can only get better. We do have a team that’s capable of making the playoffs. We just have to work hard every day.”
Since Mike Williams was released before camp, the number two receiver spot is wide open. Players like Obomanu, Tate, Baldwin, Lockette all competing to make that spot theirs. Lockette made a few nice grabs, but also got called for offensive pass interference. Tate was looking good starting at the split-end spot, and made a nice grab on a deep ball from Jackson.
