Is it confidence if you earn your keep, or ignorance if you brag? If you follow the RealRobreport.com, then you have already heard about Bruce Irvin and his guffaw. About how he saw a Washington number on his caller ID, and he was excited to play for the Redskins. He was still starstruck, and what he really meant was the Seahawks.
“How many sacks you gonna get this year,” Michael Robinson (and yes, that is our FB) asked.
“I don’t wanna say, I feel like it may jinx it, but its gonna be double digits,” Irvin replied. “All Day”
Double digits for a Seahawk DE? Possible. Chris Clemons has done it the past two years he has been in Seattle. But as it sits right now, Clemons hasn’t seen the field this year as a Seahawk. He skipped out on both the voluntary and mandatory workouts, leaving Pete Carroll surprised. Entering into his final year of his contract, Clemons is more than likely looking for more money. The Seahawks shot him an offer for a three-year deal worth 18 million, but he declined.
So who is working with the number one defense? That’s right, Bruce Irvin. Although he is a first round pick, he wasn’t slated to step right in like many other first round picks are expected to. Initial word was that Irvin was going to play third downs, and give Big Red Bryant a breather. So, why would a situational player be bragging about double-digit sacks? Bruce Irvin is a natural pass rusher, using his speed to come off the edge helping to record 22.5 sacks during his two years in college. Working Irvin in on situational plays would probably make him more aggressive and make him more determined to get after the QB. It is not really all that unheard of, in fact, a player in our division has already accomplished that as of last year. Aldon Smith, taken by the 49ers with the 7th overall pick in the 2011 draft went on to record 14 sacks without starting a single game.
So whether it is confidence or ignorance, Irvin still expects himself to get double-digit sacks this season. At this point in time, he may be thrust into the main starting role and live up to that promise. It is entirely possible that he may record his prediction even without starting. However it could go the polar opposite and Irvin could fall flat and potentially be the “reach” that everyone thought that he would be.
