After a long period of wondering if the dropped drug charges would effect him, Leroy Hill resigned today for a one year contract with the Seattle Seahawks. During the off season his girlfriend and him were arrested in Georgia for possession of marijuana, but later had the charges dropped.
With several linebackers, like Mario Williams, hitting the free agency, most of us assumed that Hill would not be returning this year, due to his past run ins with the law. This would have been his third arrest in the last three years. Jason Jones was called upon to become the new pass rushing weapon for the Hawks’ defense, which also pointed to Hills departure.
Now with The Heater, David Hawthorne, going to New Orleans Seattle had some holes to plug.
Bring in Ruud, Lutui, and resign Lewis to help with more gaps. Now Luke Kuechly from Boston college looks like a great draft pick. Lock him in next to Chris Clemons. However, it is more likely Seattle moves down the charts to grab other defensive players (Hightower).
Resign Matt McCoy. The special teams and situational linebacker to add more depth to the team. Now What?
Might as well bring back another veteran linebacker who is one of the remaining members of the Superbowl run in 2005. Hill got his first 16 game start in his career and ended with the highest total tackles in that career. His stats were 89 (68 solo) tackles, 4.0 sacks and one forced fumble. His career stats in 77 starts were 456 tackles (344 solo), 18.5 sacks and 11 passes defensed.
Hill has spent his entire career with the Seahawks after being drafted in the third round in 2005. Now he will get to stay, for at least one more year to prove himself and compete.
All personal mistakes aside, Hill had his best games last year and could only get better. This is a good grab with Hawthorne being removed. He adds experience to a growing defense along with production. If he could keep himself out of trouble off the field, he could definitely cause it on the field for opposing teams.
