After losing out on all-state Offensive Tackle Zach Banner and Wide Receiver Cedric Dozier, both from Lakes HS in Lakewood, the Huskies did not wait around in their courtship of what could be the states top WR of 2013. Yesterday, the Huskies got their first verbal commitment for 2013 in 6’4 190lb Wide Receiver Sammie Long fromLakesHS. Last year Long’s stats weren’t eye popping because he was stuck behind Cedric Dozier and Ma’ne Manea. He finished the year with 20 catches for 276 yards and 5 touchdowns. At 6’4 190lb, Long brings the size that the team had when they brought on former Lakes WR’s Reggie Williams and Jermaine Kearse. The Huskies were the first team to contact Long but he soon after received interest from California and UCLA.
With the addition of a top in-state player from a school that has recently had their top recruits leaving the state, are we now seeing the effects of the hiring of a slew of coaches that have excellent recruiting backgrounds? “I was just making sure it was what I wanted to do,” Long said. “I wanted to look at the good and the bad things ofWashington, and so far it was all good – so I went for it. It’s close to home, but I also love how they play as a team and it’s just a team that I grew up around when I was little.” If the first recruit is any sign of things to come, then Husky fans have a lot to look forward to with their top -notch recruiting coaches.
