The 2011-12 Huskies showed us that it doesn’t matter how many highly rated prospects you have on your team, if you don’t believe in the program’s system then you’re not going to reach the top of your potential. Tony Wroten’s performance Tuesday Night against UT-Arlington was the prime example. He’ll throw jaw-dropping passes, push the tempo even faster then Isiah Thomas and get to the basket at will. Coach Romar doesn’t need or preach flashy no-look passes. He wants the team to take care of the ball, push the tempo, rebound, and PLAY DEFENSE. If you watched the game on Tuesday, you would see what i noticed to be an audition for the draft status of Terrence Ross and Tony Wroten. They know that if they take their team to the Prime Time in Madison Square Garden with a strong showing in the NIT Tournament, that scouts would look past their team not making it to the Dance.
The team’s free throw struggles were many of the reasons that they didn’t make it into the Dance, but that can’t be put on Romar. You don’t think they don’t take a ton of free throw shots in practice? Shaquille O’Neal didn’t shoot 50% from the line because he never practiced it. Romar isn’t the one that’s going up to the line and missing all the free throws. Players need to step up.
Players that needed to step up could especially pertain to Darnell Gant. Romar’s put’s a lot of trust in his seniors, almost to a fault, every year. It’s up to the seniors to step up and be a leader to the younger group. But when you have a senior regress like Gant did this year and like Justin Holliday did last year, its a glaring weakness on a young team. Multiple times this year Gant had the chance to be the hero and get the team a win with a last-second shot but failed each time. Do we all remember how highly rated Gant was when he was recruited in 2007? How about the 15th rated PF in the nation. What about Abdul Gaddy? He was the #2 rated PG coming into his freshman year behind only #1 Draft Pick John Wall. It’s not the fault of Romar that Gaddy has turned into a passive average PG. More then likely when Gaddy tore his knee up, he lost his aggressiveness.
Next year’s expectation’s have to wait until we find out the decisions of Wroten and Ross. What we do know is that if they at least one of them come back that the team will need a complete on the effort hey show on defense. If they both leave for the NBA? Then the team has a long off-season of finding an identity and a star to lead the team because the Pac-12 will not be historically bad for a 2nd consecutive season and Arizona has a #1 ranked recruiting class coming into next year with the hopes of vaulting them to the top.
