Alicia Gray is a key component of South King County Colts team performances. She is not a player, Defense Coordinator or Head Coach. Alicia is their water girl. Only 11 years old, but wise beyond her years, Alicia was initially asked to help out the Minor League Football Team as a ball girl.
However, it didn’t take me long to understand why the young lady earned the much more prestigious position on staff – water girl. Alicia attends Olympic Middle School in Shelton, WA. Her favorite class is literacy because she enjoys reading, and writing. I definitely saw a younger version of myself in this precocious pre-teen. In between reading (the Hunger Games series is a favorite), and writing (she focuses on fantasy stories), Alicia does Zumba classes and horse-back riding.
Alicia Gray began her stint as water girl 2 seasons ago. The job can be easily overlooked by those of us who usually watch football on TV. Alicia’s duties start with filling all of the water bottles. She has to refill them throughout the game, and make sure they are readily available. Most importantly, Alicia has to run onto the field with the bottles (she carries them six at a time) during every time out. Sometimes, Alicia has to stop everything and deliver bottles during an unscheduled time out, which makes her job physically demanding.
Alicia Gray was not daunted by those demands. In fact she rose to their challenges! She has been applying the life lessons she had been learning from being up-close and personal to football players. When she couldn’t finish the mile race in her PE class, instead of feeling defeated, she decided to train for it! What started as fun family gym outings have since become the training that helps her in school physical challenges, as well as her job in the football field. Those Zumba and body cut classes are definitely paying off.
Finally, in her last day of school, Alicia told me a few tidbits that make her your typical 11 year old. She has one dog and 2 cats, and her future goals are continuing to keep her good grades, she enjoys crabbing with her dad…
Alicia did also share with me what makes her special. She plays Fantasy Football with her father and his friends; her greatest memory on the field was catching a water bottle from several yards away, when, up to this point, she had considered an inept catcher.
I had a hard time getting her to tell me who her favorite SKC Colt player is – she loves them all, and how inclusive they have been. She did eventually confessed that Mitch Johnson had a special place in her heart. Colts fans can only hope that their team is as committed as their water girl, and that Alicia Gray brings them good luck in all of their games!
